Daily Devotional: Psalms 37:8-13

Ps 37:8-13

8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret--it leads only to evil. 9 For evil men will be cut off, but those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land. 10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. 11 But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy great peace. 12 The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them; 13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming.

1 Cor 1:27-31

27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things-and the things that are not-to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God-that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.   31 Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."

Mankind has always had an ego problem, believing that every time period is far beyond all that have come before it. Since the tower of Babel, people have felt they were smarter than God and somehow, they could rule their own lives and determine their own destiny. While it is true that God will allow us to live as we choose, we will be held accountable for our choice. We can determine our own destiny, but it is God who has given us the choices of heaven or hell.

The wonderful thing that so many foolish people miss in their decision making, is that serving God is the only life that gives us real peace and fulfillment now, as well as the life to come. Jesus promised us the abundant life and that is only for those who are in Christ Jesus. This is why Peter, Paul and others could praise God, singing and praying while in a jail for preaching the gospel. They had Jesus!

The more we reject God, the worse our lives become because we find ourselves in a world filled with greed, hatred, bitterness, immorality and

dishonesty. While so many seek happiness in drugs or alcohol, all they find is turmoil and ruin.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your love for me. Thank you for all you have given me physically, mentally and spiritually. It is with gratitude that I study your word, knowing you have revealed yourself to all of mankind. Thank you for giving Jesus as a sacrifice for my sin. Help me always trust in you as God, in your grace as sufficient, and your love as never ending. Help me open my heart to your Spirit so I can become more like you every day. I ask a special prayer for this country in which I live and for the leaders and officials at every level of government. Give them your wisdom to rule and lead. I pray in the name of Jesus.
