Daily Devotional: Psalms 10:12-15

Ps 10:12-15

12 Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. 13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"? 14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out.

2 Peter 3:8-9

8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Jonah thought he could hide from God but found out he was wrong. Cain killed Abel his brother but God heard the blood of Abel as it cried from the ground. God sees and he hears all that we face in life and he knows when we spurn his gift of grace to us. There is an old hymn entitled “There’s an all seeing eye watching you.” When I was a child this hymn was scary to me because it made me think that God was just trying to catch me in some sin or mistake in my life.

While God does see sin and hates it because it goes against his nature as a holy God, the idea of this song was that no matter what we face in life, God is there and he sees all of our trouble. There is an old western song that says “nobody knows the trouble I see and nobody knows my sorrow.” God does see and he does know all of our sorrow. But God not only sees and knows, he cares. He gives his Spirit to lift us up. He has given his Son to offer us forgiveness when we sin and in turn give us peace and joy in a world of trouble. God is love.

What a joy it is to be able to serve a living God who loves us and wants us to be like him and live with him in eternity. While God is a just God and has declared that the wages of sin is death, he is also a merciful God who offers the free gift of eternal life to all who will come to him in Jesus. Paul says that by the sacrifice of Jesus, God is both just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

O God, my heavenly Father who gives life and breath to all, I come to you today in humility as the one who made me and has given me all I have. I am so thankful that you care for me and all I face in life. You lift me up when I am down and you give me peace in a time of trouble. When I am weak you give strength and when I don’t know what to do, you give me wisdom and direction. While I know there is nothing I can do to earn any favor and especially eternal life, I want to live for you and please you in every way. Forgive me when I fail. I pray in Jesus name.
