Daily Devotional: Psalms 9:13-20

Ps 9:13-20

13 O LORD, see how my enemies persecute me! Have mercy and lift me up from the gates of death, 14 that I may declare your praises in the gates of the Daughter of Zion and there rejoice in your salvation. 15 The nations have fallen into the pit they have dug; their feet are caught in the net they have hidden. 16 The LORD is known by his justice; the wicked are ensnared by the work of their hands. Higgaion. Selah 17 The wicked return to the grave, all the nations that forget God. 18 But the needy will not always be forgotten, nor the hope of the afflicted ever perish. 19 Arise, O LORD, let not man triumph; let the nations be judged in your presence. 20 Strike them with terror, O LORD; let the nations know they are but men.

Heb 1:1-3

1 In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

We look around and we see wickedness abound everywhere. It seems that evil is in control. This should not surprise us since Satan is called the prince, the ruler, and the god of this world. However, it is made plain that all things are under the control of Jesus our Lord. Satan is allowed to run a lot of things and is given a lot of freedom to act but he is like a vicious dog on a chain that only goes so far.

Just before Jesus ascended back to the Father, he told his disciples that all authority had been given to him, both in heaven and on earth. We are told that he will rule until the end of the ages at which time he will hand all things back over to God the Father. Jesus is God and all that we know in our existence is a part of his creation. He has lived in heaven as God but has also lived here on earth as one of mankind. He has died a physical death but was resurrected to eternal life. He is qualified to rule here but also to be our advocate in heaven.

O Lord God, ruler of heaven and earth, I know you are Lord of all. Impress on my mind every day your glory and your majesty so I will want to be like you and want to live with you eternally. Help me keep my eyes and my mind focused on you and on the things above. Lord, as I grow older, help me to grow closer to you. I ask your blessings on those who are tending elderly parents or other loved ones that they will have wisdom and patience but also strength. Help me always show respect to others, regardless of age. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
