Daily Devotional: Psalms 107:23-32

Ps 107:23-32

23 Others went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters. 24 They saw the works of the LORD, his wonderful deeds in the deep. 25 For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves. 26 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. 27 They reeled and staggered like drunken men; they were at their wits' end. 28 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. 29 He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. 30 They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. 31 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men. 32 Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders.

Mark 4:37-41

37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don't you care if we drown?” 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

When we face the storms of life (and we all do from time to time), we can trust the Lord to calm the sea. We may be afraid that we will drown but Jesus is greater than the worst thing we will ever face or have come upon us. As the disciples asked if he did not care, so we wonder at times (and even ask) if God knows or if he even cares what we are facing and going through. Is our Savior asleep while we are about to perish? Our Lord knows what we are facing but is waiting on us to turn to him and ask for his help.

We stand in awe at the power of God today as we review all he has done for us so many times. We give thanks to him for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds in our lives. We praise him because he delivers us from our distress.

Heavenly Father, I am so thankful for all of the times you have carried me through the storms in my life and brought me safely to the other side. As you calm the waves of fear and doubt, you also give me strength to carry on and hope for the sunlight of tomorrow. It is with a grateful heart and reverent fear that I see your mighty power but also your tender love for me. Increase my faith! Give me the courage I need to share the good news of Jesus with those around me. Help me show others your love and your forgiveness. I pray in the name of Jesus.
