Daily Devotional: Psalms 105:28-36

Ps 105:28-36

28 He sent darkness and made the land dark--for had they not rebelled against his words? 29 He turned their waters into blood, causing their fish to die. 30 Their land teemed with frogs, which went up into the bedrooms of their rulers. 31 He spoke, and there came swarms of flies, and gnats throughout their country. 32 He turned their rain into hail, with lightning throughout their land; 33 he struck down their vines and fig trees and shattered the trees of their country. 34 He spoke, and the locusts came, grasshoppers without number; 35 they ate up every green thing in their land, ate up the produce of their soil. 36 Then he struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of all their manhood.

John 20:29-31

29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

For centuries to come, the Israelites were reminded by God about the miracles he had performed when they came out of Egypt. They would be told that these gave proof that he alone is God. In turn, they told their children of them as a means to remind them to be faithful to the God who made them his special people.

Years later Paul spoke of these events, he said they were a reminder for us as an example of how God works and how he requires our trust and our obedience. We read of these miracles and we know that our God is a mighty God who is over all things. He controls those in power for the good of his people.

We also read of the many miracles and signs that Jesus performed and they are written so that we might believe in him as the Son of God. We don’t have to see these kinds of things take place today because we have a book full of them given as evidence that God is God and Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus said it is much better to read of these miracles and believe than to have to see them for ourselves.

Lord God, give me faith to trust you in all things; more faith and greater faith each day so my hope and my trust are in you alone. Thank you for sending your Son to die for my sin and thank you for revealing your will along with all of the mighty deeds and signs you have given over the centuries. I want to do your will in all things but I know I fail far too often. Please continue to forgive me and help me be more determined to be all you want me to be – to yield myself and my heart to your Spirit. Thank you for giving your healing to many for whom I have prayed and continue to be with others on my heart. I pray in the name of Jesus.
