Daily Devotional: Psalms 104:1-9

Ps 104:1-9

1 Praise the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty. 2 He wraps himself in light as with a garment; he stretches out the heavens like a tent 3 and lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds his chariot and rides on the wings of the wind. 4 He makes winds his messengers, flames of fire his servants. 5 He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved. 6 You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. 7 But at your rebuke the waters fled, at the sound of your thunder they took to flight; 8 they flowed over the mountains, they went down into the valleys, to the place you assigned for them. 9 You set a boundary they cannot cross; never again will they cover the earth.

Rev 1:8

8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”

This Psalm, believed to be written by David, is a psalm of praise. It extols the mighty power of God in creation and control of all the earth. As the creator, God can and does continue to control all things. He gave an order to his creation but when he chose to do so, he upset this order by sending the flood during the days of Noah. Because of the wickedness that prevailed he destroyed the world as it was and began anew with the family of righteous Noah. But now he has made a promise to never do this again and the waters have their boundaries which he does not allow to be broken. The beautiful rainbow signifies this promise.

There has probably never been anyone better qualified to speak of the power of God in the works of nature, or among the nations or in the life of a single person than was David. From the lowliest family working as a shepherd, God made him the greatest king of all time as he ruled over the world of his day. Beginning with his victory over the giant Philistine warrior while using only a sling and a few small stones, he won many battles against all odds with the help and power of God. He knew and understood the power of God in his daily life.

O God, while I praise you as the creator and sustainer of life, I tend to forget that your power extends to my life on a daily basis. I know there is nothing beyond your control in the entire universe. I also know you have handed over this power to your Son and he reigns over all things in heaven and earth. As I let this sink in my mind, help me actually submit to your will in all things. I am so thankful for all you have done and continue to do for me every day. You have delivered me from so much evil and harm and blessed me so abundantly. I pray in Jesus name.
