Daily Devotional: Psalms 101:1-4

Ps 101:1-4

1 I will sing of your love and justice; to you, O LORD, I will sing praise. 2 I will be careful to lead a blameless life--when will you come to me? I will walk in my house with blameless heart. 3 I will set before my eyes no vile thing. The deeds of faithless men I hate; they will not cling to me. 4 Men of perverse heart shall be far from me; I will have nothing to do with evil.

2 Tim 3:14-17

14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

God has provided us with all we need to know to be able to live for him. It is in these scriptures that we learn the importance of the influence of others on our lives and ours upon them. Paul warns the Corinthians that evil companions will corrupt good morals. The general tendency is that evil people will have more effect on those who are good than the reverse. This means we need to stay away from those who are wicked as much as possible and certainly not make them our closest companions when we have a choice.

This is not to say that our example is of no value. We are to live for God and give him praise with thanksgiving and as we do, there will be others who see us and will be attracted to Jesus by our example. This is especially true when they see the peace and happiness in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering. It is also true that as they see our faith in Jesus and commitment to his word they will see that we live with a solid foundation and that too will be appealing to them.

We are not to have a “holier than thou” attitude nor should we act as though we are somehow better than others around us. The best of us are just people who have been forgiven by the blood of Jesus and we are seeking to do his will. We are not the standard but God and his word is the only measure of righteousness.

O Lord my God, I am surrounded by so many who are wicked and fail to see you and acknowledge you as God. The news media and the world of entertainment is filled with all kinds of evil and bombard me with every kind of false knowledge. I ask you to help me put forth a constant effort to learn your word and to spend time with you in prayer so I can be strong in faith and in your might. Help me be more devoted to you with a loving spirit and a pure heart. Forgive me when I fail to be all you want me to be. I pray in the name of Jesus my Savior.
