Daily Devotional: Psalms 88:11-18

Ps 88:11-18

11 Is your love declared in the grave, your faithfulness in Destruction? 12 Are your wonders known in the place of darkness, or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion? 13 But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you. 14 Why, O LORD, do you reject me and hide your face from me? 15 From my youth I have been afflicted and close to death; I have suffered your terrors and am in despair. 16 Your wrath has swept over me; your terrors have destroyed me. 17 All day long they surround me like a flood; they have completely engulfed me. 18 You have taken my companions and loved ones from me; the darkness is my closest friend.

Heb 11:39-40

39 These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. 40 God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.

O that we could know and have the mind of the Lord. Just when we think we know what he is doing or why things are as they seem to be, we see his wisdom revealed and our ignorance shown. “Who has known the mind of the Lord that we should instruct him?” In comparison to God we are so small and know so little that we best learn to keep quiet and in humility serve and praise him.

One of the many things that baffles our minds and is beyond our comprehension is eternity and all that includes. How do we think about anything without it being measured by time? Infinity does not fit our minds or thinking. Yet, God is infinite in every way relative to time, space, knowledge and wisdom. He created all that exists and therefore he has and knows no boundaries.

When God declares something to be, who am I to question it? This is true relative to what we call science in every field of thinking. Nowhere is this truer than in morality. God, in his infinite purity, is by nature truth, he is moral, he is just and at the same time he is gracious and he is love. He doesn’t slip up or make mistakes because he is absolute in nature; he is God.

O Lord God, gracious, loving and kind, I come to you giving you all praise and honor. Give me an understanding heart and a willing spirit to live for you every moment of every day as I learn to put you first in all things. Fill my heart with fear and an awesome reverence as I think of you and approach you but also help me feel and know your constant presence in my life. As you live in me through your Spirit, help me yield my life to you more completely. Thank you for loving me. Use me to help others in their struggles. Use me to teach and encourage as I have the opportunity. Be with those who are sick and grieving. I pray in Jesus name.
