Daily Devotional: Psalms 76:1-6

Ps 76:1-6

1 In Judah God is known; his name is great in Israel. 2 His tent is in Salem, his dwelling place in Zion. 3 There he broke the flashing arrows, the shields and the swords, the weapons of war. Selah 4 You are resplendent with light, more majestic than mountains rich with game. 5 Valiant men lie plundered, they sleep their last sleep; not one of the warriors can lift his hands. 6 At your rebuke, O God of Jacob, both horse and chariot lie still.

Heb. 11:32-35

32 And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets, 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.

God used the men and women of faith to deliver his people and establish his kingdom in Israel. Some we consider to be great but others seem to be weaklings when we look at their stories. At times God made the weak strong and at other times he used them in their weakness. The point behind all the stories of the Old Testament is not really the people involved but that God was behind it all. He was showing his power, his majesty and his dominance over the world. He alone set up the kings and kingdoms and he removed them at will.

God is still God and his name is great in all the earth. There were those in the old days that did not show him honor, even as there are some today who do the same. That does not change God. He is still over the earth, the nations and the rulers who preside. He gives them power and he takes it away as he wills.

Jesus is King of Kings and he is Lord of Lords. His kingdom is eternal and all who belong to God are citizens but also his children. We are priests who serve him and honor his holy name. Since we belong to him, we are to seek to become like him in all things. His way is best – best for us and best for all around us. His children stand out like stars in a dark and black sky as we reflect his light to the world.

Holy Father, giver of life and light, help me let my light shine as I bring glory to your name in all I do and say. Help me ever walk in the light of your Son as I seek to be more like him each day. Thank you for your forgiveness as I walk with you and with him. I ask for your mercy on our great country. There are so many who have turned from you and who promote hatred and wickedness. Please turn them from this and open their hearts to know you and your love. Give me faith to serve you in the face of opposition. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
