Daily Devotional: Psalms 75:1-5

Ps 75:1-5

1 We give thanks to you, O God, we give thanks, for your Name is near; men tell of your wonderful deeds. 2 You say, “I choose the appointed time; it is I who judge uprightly. 3 When the earth and all its people quake, it is I who hold its pillars firm. Selah 4 To the arrogant I say, ‘Boast no more,’ and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horns. 5 Do not lift your horns against heaven; do not speak with outstretched neck.’”

2 Peter 3:13-15

13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness. 14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. 15 Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.

Time – now that is an interesting phenomenon. Nothing is more concrete and absolute, yet more relative in our minds. An hour, a day, week or year – these are all measured and real but how long is a “little while” or “soon” or other measures of time we use? When we are twelve years old it seems a year is forever but as we get into our later years of life, it seems to just fly by in moments.

Our lives are geared, measured and often controlled by time. We watch the clock to make sure we get to bed on time and then set our alarm so we are not late the next morning. We celebrate our birthdays and anniversaries. Some of us even eat at certain times. We become slaves to the calendar and the clock.

The problem with all of this is we try to apply our measures of time to God. We limit him in our minds or we measure his goodness by how rapid we see or don’t see a response to our prayers. We see sin abound with no retribution or we see good people suffering when seemingly no one notices. We then begin to fear, to doubt or question God because he does not use our sense of timing.

God is not bound by time. The only time that comes into play with God is that he knows the absolute “right” time for anything and everything that happens to us or to any part of the world around us. So we must trust God with time.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the years you have given me on the earth. Thank you for the time I have had with my wife and family. Thank you for the years you have given me to enjoy with your church of which I am a part. Make me more keenly aware of using my time to your glory. Help me make the most of each moment – the simple blessings that abound and are all around, such as the birds, the beautiful trees, the blue skies, the glorious sunset and so much more. Help me treasure each moment with loved one. I pray in the name of Jesus.
