Daily Devotional: Psalms 53:1-6

Ps 53:1-6

1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and their ways are vile; there is no one who does good. 2 God looks down from heaven on the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. 3 Everyone has turned away, they have together become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one. 4 Will the evildoers never learn--those who devour my people as men eat bread and who do not call on God? 5 There they were, overwhelmed with dread, where there was nothing to dread. God scattered the bones of those who attacked you; you put them to shame, for God despised them. 6 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When God restores the fortunes of his people, let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

Rom 3:22-24

22 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Why is it foolish to deny the existence of God? If it were only a matter of an intellectual exercise or philosophical argument, it would not matter. The reason it makes an eternal difference is given by the preacher of old when he said the reason we all exist is to fear God and to keep his commandments because we will all stand in judgment and give an accounting to him.

God made us to serve him. So when the fool denies that God exists, they are ignoring all of the evidence that God has given us in creation. Every day we look around and see the wonders of God in the workings and in the beauty of what we call “nature”. Paul says these are without excuse and will pay the eternal penalty of death. The only solution is being reconciled to God in Christ Jesus.

But being a Christian in name only does not give us salvation. We must live for Christ and honor God in all we do. Paul said that for him to live was Christ and that he no longer lived but Christ lived in him. Can we honestly say this too?

Thank you Lord for loving me. Thank you God for being willing to provide a way for me to be reconciled to you. Give me a pure heart and a burning desire to be yours in every way. Give me wisdom to show others Jesus living in me. You have given me a loving family and I ask you to help me be what you want me to be in my relationship with each of them. You have blessed me with your spiritual family and I ask you to give me wisdom to be an encouragement and help to each of these as my brothers and sisters in Christ. I am ever thankful for those who encourage and help me in so many ways. I pray in the name of Jesus.
