Daily Devotional: Psalms 31:9-13

Ps 31:9-13

Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief. 10 My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak. 11 Because of all my enemies, I am the utter contempt of my neighbors and an object of dread to my closest friends—those who see me on the street flee from me. 12 I am forgotten as though I were dead; I have become like broken pottery. 13 For I hear many whispering, “Terror on every side!” They conspire against me and plot to take my life.

I Pet 1:6-7

In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

David was human. This may come as surprise to some but he actually had his good days and his bad days. Yes, David who as a young man had killed the famous Philistine giant with a sling and a rock; this man of faith that we so admire; this same man had his moments of doubt, anxiety and depression. There were times in his life that he “hit the bottom” and felt that no one else cared and he had to face the world all alone.

God had told him he would become the next king of Israel but he spent years running and hiding from Saul who was the current king. Even while living in the caves and open fields, he trusted God but things did not seem to get any better for him. At times he would reason with Saul and always won the argument with Saul promising to change but not keeping his word.

The thing we see about David in all this is that while he had his moments, he would always turn to God in complete trust. Deep down inside, he knew that God would keep his word and would protect him. So he used his trials, persecutions and hardships to make him a better person and build his faith even stronger.

Lord God, increase my faith and give me strength to yield to you and your will in all things so I can become more like David. You have given me your assurance that you will never leave me nor forsake me so help me trust you, no matter what happens in my life. I thank you for all you have done for me and the many times you have pulled me from the pit and set my feet on solid ground. Thank you for those you have put in my life to help me and encourage me. Use me to encourage others and help them keep going. I pray in the name of Jesus.
