Daily Devotional: Psalms 22:6-11

Ps 22:6-11

6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people. 7 All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads: 8 "He trusts in the LORD; let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him." 9 Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you even at my mother's breast. 10 From birth I was cast upon you; from my mother's womb you have been my God. 11 Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help.

Matt 27:41-44

41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 "He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself! He's the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'" 44 In the same way the robbers who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

Imagine! It was not enough that the religious leaders of God’s people were killing the Son of God, the promised Messiah, but in their self-righteous piety, they stand and mock him as he dies. Surely he was scorned and despised by the very people he had come to save. Yet, he uttered no threats but kept entrusting himself to the Father who judges righteously. His retaliation toward them was “Father, forgive them because they don’t understand what they are doing.”

One of the amazing things about Bible study is how many times the prophecies of the Old Testament are fulfilled in the birth, the life, the death, the burial and the resurrection of Jesus. These are not just in some general sense but his enemies uttered the very words that had been foretold centuries before.

When we consider what Jesus has done for us, how can we ever think he requires too much of us today? When we have given our all, we have only made a small drop in the ocean compared to the love and the suffering he has shown for us. He is our savior because he loves us and wants us to be with him in eternity. Surely we can imitate him and live for him today.

Father, God of heaven and earth, I thank you for your love, your compassion and your marvelous grace shown to me in Jesus, your Son. Give me more faith to trust you and to imitate him in my life today. Fill me with your Spirit so my heart will be filled with your love until it overflows to all around me. Help me share the good news of Jesus with others and lead them to you. Give me wisdom to encourage others in their quest to serve you. Please be with those who are sick and give strength and patience to their caregivers. I pray in the name of Jesus.
