Daily Devotional: Psalms 18:1-6

Ps 18:1-6

1 I love you, O LORD, my strength. 2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. 3 I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies. 4 The cords of death entangled me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. 5 The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me. 6 In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.

John 6:66-69

66 As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew, and were not walking with Him anymore. 67 Jesus said therefore to the twelve, "You do not want to go away also, do you?"  68 Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. 69 "And we have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God."

When troubles come in our lives, where do we turn? Do we seek to solve all of our problems on our own? Do we turn to family or friends? Yes, there is a place for these but where do we turn for strength and ultimate victory? It is only in trusting the Lord and turning everything over to him that we can find real peace and a real solution to our problems.

He is lofty and high above the heavens but he hears from his throne as we pray to him today, even as he heard the Psalmist in his time. There is nothing so big or so terrible that he cannot take care of it. He made us and he always knows what is best for us. His answer may not be what we think is best at the time but we can always trust him to lead us and take us to where he wants us to be.

But even more than solving our earthly problems, it is eternal life that he offers to each of us and there is no other place we can go but to Jesus. In fact, one of the reasons we don’t get what we ask for every time is because he is getting us ready to be with him in eternity. As we are molded more and more into his image, we become less and less like the world around us. Jesus has the words of eternal life.

O God, thank you for sending your Son to the earth to live and die for me; so I can have eternal life. You are above all things in every way and I cannot even imagine what you are really like but I am held in awe as I contemplate your power, your wisdom, your strength and your majesty! Help me keep my heart set on you and on living for you, every moment of every day. Forgive me when I fail to be all you want me to be. Use me in your service. I pray in the name of Jesus.
