Daily Devotional: Psalms 6:1-5

Ps 6:1-5

1 O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. 2 Be merciful to me, LORD, for I am faint; O LORD, heal me, for my bones are in agony. 3 My soul is in anguish. How long, O LORD, how long? 4 Turn, O LORD, and deliver me; save me because of your unfailing love. 5 No one remembers you when he is dead. Who praises you from the grave?

1 Peter 5:6-7, 10-11

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Paul said that there were times when his trials were beyond what he could bear and that he despaired even for life itself. It was in these difficult situations that he learned to trust the God of all comforts and depend on his strength. He then used these experiences to comfort and strengthen others who were facing difficult times in their lives. In weakness that he learned to be strong.

We can do the same today. When we face the trials (and all of us do at times in various ways and degrees) we can turn all of our fears and anxieties over to God and trust him for strength to overcome. He will never let us down. We may not get the results we want or think is best but God will always protect us and use whatever happens for our good.

We must never forget that Satan is behind all of the evil in the world. He will do all he can to make us lose our faith in God. He will boost our ego so that we will try to overcome on our own. He will tell us to “suck it up” or “pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps” or some other cliché to make us think we can handle things without God. He will beat us down until we are ready to give up but we can never quit trusting God. Satan knows he has already lost the battle against God so he is seeking to do all the damage he can to God’s people while he has time. Rom 8:37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

O God, creator and sustainer of life and all things, I praise you and give you all honor and glory. I realize that without you I am nothing and I need you in my life in all things and in every way. Thank you for all you have given me and done for me. Thank you for teaching me how to have compassion, learning to love and learning to cry without shame. Keep me from ever being proud and thinking I can win the battles of life without you, your strength and your wisdom. Teach me to submit to you so I can be strong in you. I pray in the name of Jesus.
