Daily Devotional: Psalms 3:5-8

Ps 3:5-8

5 I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the LORD sustains me. 6 I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side. 7 Arise, O LORD! Deliver me, O my God! Strike all my enemies on the jaw; break the teeth of the wicked. 8 From the LORD comes deliverance. May your blessing be on your people.

1 Corinthians 10:13

13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

When we face trials in life, we can know that we are not alone. There are many others who have been through the same things in their lives and have overcome the devil. Whether these battles we face are spiritual in nature or are physical things does not matter because God is greater and they are under his control. We need only trust him and his strength to be victorious.

It is with this assurance that we can go to sleep at night instead of walking the floors or wringing our hands. We turn all our anxiety over to God with knowledge that he will defeat our enemies and win our battles. Our Lord once slept in a boat in the midst of a storm while his disciples panicked. When they awoke him, he rebuked the wind. The storm stopped and the sea became calm. They were amazed and said that even the winds and waves obey him.

We also know that God has allowed some to be put to death for his name while he has delivered others from their persecutions. Why did he allow Stephen to be stoned to death but delivered Paul and Silas from jail? The answer is simple but it does not satisfy our minds. God did what he wanted to do for his purpose. We must never presume to know best or think we can demand from God our own will, wisdom or thinking. God is in control. He will answer our prayers but it will be in his time and in his own way.

Father in heaven, thank you for your Son who died for my sin. Thank you for the opportunity to know you and to be able to know your will. Give me wisdom to understand your word and greater faith to trust you in all things. As I trust you more each day, help me show others your love and your grace as revealed in your gospel. Give me wisdom to use all that has come into my life to help others and to glorify your name. Fill me with your Spirit and increase my patience with things around me. Give me greater self-control so I can become more like you. Give your healing to the sick where it is your will. I pray in the name of Jesus.
