Daily Devotional: Psalms 138:6-8

Ps 138:6-8

6 Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar. 7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me. 8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever--do not abandon the works of your hands.

Ephesians 3:20-21 20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

What can God do with me? Who am I to be able to carry out his work? Is it really possible that God could use me in his service and for his purpose? The answer is that God can and always has used some of the most unlikely people to be great in his service. He uses the weak to show his strength. He uses the ordinary to carry out his extraordinary purposes. God can do abundantly more with you and me than we can even imagine.

As his children we are warned not to quench the Spirit he has given us. We are also told not to grieve his Spirit. Jesus told his disciples to pray for his Spirit. In the Old Testament we see one who had a portion of the Spirit and then another given a double portion. God gives his Spirit to all of his children. It is then up to us to allow him to work in us, mold us, change us and empower us. We can refuse to let him carry out his work in us and thus put out his fire in our hearts and grieve him or we can yield to his bidding and show forth his fruit in our lives.

What is God’s purpose for you or for me? As we yield to his bidding and follow his word, we will be given opportunities to live for him. It may be some great task, as was given Moses or it may be something as seemingly simple as being a godly father or mother. It may be that we become a great teacher or we may be able to visit the lonely widow and give her cheer. Some of the least recognized activities in life may yield the most significant results. Think of the powerful work carried out by Timothy’s mother and grandmother as they taught him to trust God.

Heavenly Father, help me yield my heart and my life to your bidding. Help me keep focused on you and your will for me. Give me wisdom to understand and apply your word to my life. As your Spirit seeks to transform my heart and my life, help me become more like you. Use me to help others – whether it is in teaching, preaching, encouraging, or in some more private and lesser known way. Never let me forget that all I am and all I do is to bring glory to you and lead others closer to you. Help me forget myself in all things. I pray in the name of Jesus.
