Daily Devotional: Psalms 136:16-22

Ps 136:1-3, 16-22

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever. 2 Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever. 3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords: His love endures forever…. 16 to him who led his people through the desert, His love endures forever. 17 who struck down great kings, His love endures forever. 18 and killed mighty kings--His love endures forever. 19 Sihon king of the Amorites His love endures forever. 20 and Og king of Bashan--His love endures forever. 21 and gave their land as an inheritance, His love endures forever. 22 an inheritance to his servant Israel; His love endures forever.

No matter what his people faced as they traveled from Egypt to the land of Canaan, God was with them and delivered them from their perils. When they needed water and none was to be found, he made it flow from a dry rock. (And don’t forget that this was probably between one and three million people plus all of their cattle, sheep and goats.) When they were hungry and needed food, he brought it from heaven and gave them an abundance every day. Their clothes and their shoes did not wear out for forty years.

As they made this journey over the distance and the years, there were several kings who considered them to be a threat and tried to stop them. Each time an army would attach, God defeated the enemy and delivered them. God had promised to bring them to the new land and God kept his promises.

God has promised to be with his people today. He has promised to never allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able to bear but rather with each temptation, he will provide a way of escape. When he does not take away our peril, he always gives us grace and strength to bear what we face so we can learn to trust in God and not in ourselves because in our weakness we are made strong.

As we journey through life we must never forget that his love endures forever. He loves us and always wants what is best for us so we face life with contentment and in joy, one day at a time, knowing that he knows what is best and is leading and preparing us for that promised land that is eternal.

O God, my heavenly Father, I thank you and praise you because your love does endure forever. I know I can trust you in all things and I ask you to help me be faithful on a daily basis. Help me trust you in the small problems I face and trust you for the major issues of life. I thank you and praise you for the many blessings I have been given and ask you to help me use all I have and all I am to your glory. Give me wisdom and give me patience to be what you want me to be. Help me lead others to you and to give strength to those who are seeking to serve you. Be with those who struggling. I pray in the name of Jesus.
