Daily Devotional: Psalms 135:15-21

Ps 135:15-21

15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by the hands of men. 16 They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but they cannot see; 17 they have ears, but cannot hear, nor is there breath in their mouths. 18 Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them. 19 O house of Israel, praise the LORD; O house of Aaron, praise the LORD; 20 O house of Levi, praise the LORD; you who fear him, praise the LORD. 21 Praise be to the LORD from Zion, to him who dwells in Jerusalem. Praise the LORD.

Why is there so much wickedness in the world? Why do people disregard the rights of others, the property of those around them and even human life? Why are so many filled with greed, hatred, bitterness and immorality? We often hear people talking about how we need to just love each other and how everyone should get along with others but we don’t see it happening. I grew up in a time when peace symbols and flower children were prevalent. But where has it gotten us? Mostly a generation of confused and left over hippies!

Paul said that when people continue to refuse to acknowledge God as God and refuse to thank him for all he has provided that eventually there comes a time when God will just give up on them and turn them over to their vile lives. I once knew a man named “Al” who told me the only god he served was the green stuff in his wallet. That was all that mattered to Al. Consequently, everything he did was guided by what would make him more money or how he could retain what he had already made. I heard him brag about threatening to kill someone who owed him a very small debt and that person believed he would do it. Al had no morals or qualms about doing anything that would earn money.

Someone has said that we can never rise above the god we serve. Any god other than the God of the Bible will lead those who follow it into deeper and deeper sin and perversity. Today we have those who are humanist. They are their own gods and deny the reality of a real God who loves them. Many worship the gods of pleasure, work, wealth, success or power while others serve the gods of greed, immorality, addictions or total selfishness. They act like the gods they serve.

O God, help me see you in all of your creation and know your power in the winds, the waves of the ocean and storms. Open my eyes to your love and beauty in the autumn colors, the gentle brook, the birds that sing and the flowers that bloom. Most of all, open my heart to your word so that I can know your mercy, your grace and the forgiveness you afford in Jesus Christ. Fill me with your Spirit so my life will be molded to conform to your image as my heart is changed to a heart of love, compassion and mercy. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
