Daily Devotional: Psalms 135:1-7

Ps 135:1-7

1 Praise the LORD. Praise the name of the LORD; praise him, you servants of the LORD, 2 you who minister in the house of the LORD, in the courts of the house of our God. 3 Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good; sing praise to his name, for that is pleasant. 4 For the LORD has chosen Jacob to be his own, Israel to be his treasured possession. 5 I know that the LORD is great, that our Lord is greater than all gods. 6 The LORD does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths. 7 He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth; he sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.

The God of the Bible is the only true God. The difference between our God and all of the other gods of the world is that God can think, plan and promise and then he can actually act on his plans and promises. All of the other gods can only do what their subjects can imagine and then it is not real. For them to do anything requires that someone do it for them. Paul says that our God can do exceedingly, abundantly beyond all we can ask or think. That is God!

To truly be God he must be able to do whatever he desires. He created us and all that is in the world and the entire universe. (And who knows what else he created that we can’t see and don’t even know about?) He is limited only by his nature. He cannot lie, he is love, he is faithful and he always does what is best for those who seek him. His wisdom is infinite so he never makes mistakes.

God is love. So many of the gods of this world are gods of hate and revenge and only seek to deal out retribution or make life miserable. That is because these are all a part of the order of the god of this world – Satan himself. His goal is to destroy us or at least cause us to destroy ourselves. He will do all in his power to convince us to side with him against the God of heaven, knowing that we will then face the wrath of God when we face him in judgement.

We serve and praise the only true God. God is love and God is good. Our God is gracious and forgiving to those who will trust him and serve him. He will always protect his people and one day give us a home with him in eternity.

O God, I thank you for your love. I thank you for your goodness, your mercy and compassion. I thank you for making a way for me to be forgiven of my sin. Thank you for making it possible for me to be your child and to have the opportunity to talk with you. As I see your power, your majesty and only imagine your glory, I am humbled and stand in awe. Continue to cleanse me and then use me to carry out your will here on earth. Please be with those who are sick, hurting and struggling to be what you want them to be. I pray in the name of Jesus.
