Daily Devotional: Psalms 118:8-14

Psalms 118:8-14

8 It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man. 9 It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes. 10 All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the LORD I cut them off. 11 They surrounded me on every side, but in the name of the LORD I cut them off. 12 They swarmed around me like bees, but they died out as quickly as burning thorns; in the name of the LORD I cut them off. 13 I was pushed back and about to fall, but the LORD helped me. 14 The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.

What a wonderful feeling to know that no matter what we face in life, we have God on our side to deliver us from our trials. We live in this world and it is so easy to follow the wisdom and advice of the world to guide our lives. After all, we see others who are following this advice and they seem to prosper. But the wisdom of this world is demonic in nature and is from Satan, not God.

This earthly wisdom is selfish and does not consider the wellbeing or feelings of others. By being selfish it is also greedy and is willing to do whatever it takes to “get ahead” or be successful in earthly terms. This so called wisdom will deify man or “nature” or anything but God and then cause us to follow blindly that which is actually foolishness and not wisdom at all. The end result of this wisdom will be more problems with self and with others around us.

That which is foolishness to God is far wiser than the greatest wisdom man can offer. His wisdom will lead us in a path that is often not popular and may cause some temporary problems but will ultimately take us to be in eternity in glory with him. But even here on earth his wisdom is peace loving, considerate, full of mercy, sincere and impartial.

God is not partial toward anyone. His wisdom will lead us to not be prejudice or partial toward anyone but rather to love everyone. The wisdom from above will destroy hatred, bitterness and clamor and replace it with compassion, kindness and forgiveness. The Lord is our strength, our song and our salvation.

O God, I thank you for your wonderful love that is beyond my ability to know and to understand. I thank you for the peace you give when I follow your will and the untiring pain of conscience when I fail to be what you want me to be. Give me your wisdom and the strength of your Spirit to make me what you want me to become. Use me to carry out your will in my life and in so doing to help others in their journey to heaven as well. I ask a special prayer for our country and our leaders, as well as the leaders of other countries, that they will listen to you and your wisdom. I pray in the name of Jesus, my redeemer and salvation.
