Daily Devotional: Psalms 111:6-10

Psalms 111:6-10

6 He has shown his people the power of his works, giving them the lands of other nations. 7 The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. 8 They are steadfast for ever and ever, done in faithfulness and uprightness. 9 He provided redemption for his people; he ordained his covenant forever--holy and awesome is his name. 10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.

As we read the stories of the Old Testament and see all the things God did for his people, it is easy for us to be filled with awe. He established a covenant with Abraham and promised that his descendants would become a mighty nation. God kept his promise in a most unlikely way when he brought the slaves of Egypt out of their bondage.  He had promised Abraham the land of Canaan as an inheritance and he gave it to his people with a mighty hand.

We are easily amazed (and rightly so) as we read about the plagues God brought upon Egypt. We see his power as he parted the Red Sea and allowed his people to escape the army of Egypt and then used the same waters to destroy them. He brought water from a rock and sent food from heaven. God showed his great power but also his love and his faithfulness in all this. Through Moses he gave them the law by which they were to live.

The writer of Hebrews tells us that as Christians we have a better covenant with God with better promises than did physical Israel. We have a better high priest in Jesus than they had in the descendants of Aaron. We have a better sacrifice than they because ours is eternal. Paul adds to this by saying we have given up our bondage to law and to sin and it has been replaced with freedom in Christ.

God has done so much for us in Christ Jesus in so many ways. We not only enjoy so many physical blessing because of our relationship with him but we have all spiritual blessings in him. The greatest of these is that our sins have been forgiven and we can enjoy fellowship with other saints while here on earth and then eternal fellowship with Christ and God in heaven.

I thank you and praise you God for your wonderful love, your matchless wisdom and your mighty power. Not only have you created all things that exist but you have provided eternity to me and others who will serve you through Christ. Fill my heart with your Spirit and give me wisdom to know how to be all you want me to become. Give me strength to do and be all you have shown me in your word. Use me to help others as they seek to live for you. Every day I realize even more that I am nothing without you. I pray in the name of Jesus my Savior and Lord.
