Daily Devotional: Psalms 108:1-5

Psalms 108:1-5

1 My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music with all my soul. 2 Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. 3 I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. 4 For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. 5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, and let your glory be over all the earth.

We all need to take time to stop what we are doing and praise the Lord. If the only time we offer praise to our God is when we assemble with a group, then we are missing a big part of serving him. We should be filled with such gratitude for all he has done and is doing for us that we overflow with praise and thanksgiving every day of our lives.

Our worship in a church service is important. It is God’s idea for us to meet in these assemblies and who told us that we are not to forsake them. He knows that in this way we can be mutually built up and his name can be honored. We can study his word together and in sharing our thoughts we can all learn more about his word. There are so many other benefits of meeting together as fellow Christians and as members of the body of Christ. Paul told the Ephesians that we all supply our individual part and the body grows in love.

But another very important part of our spiritual growth depends on our personal study and individual devotions in our private hours. It is then that we can be near to God and feel his presence in our hearts as we commune with him in our Bible study and prayer time. We can reflect on the many personal blessings we enjoy but take for granted and we can praise him with thanksgiving.

Most who get this are in the USA and we are afforded so many freedoms and enjoy so much luxury that we just assume everyone else does too. The truth is that many are serving God every day in the face of adversity and even persecution. We cannot imagine having to constantly watch for the soldiers who may come and beat us up or even kill some of us if we are caught studying the Bible or singing praises to our God, yet many face this every day but never waver in their faith and commitment to the Savior.

O God, I thank you for all the blessings you give me. I thank you for the many freedoms I enjoy and have had my entire life by being born in this country by your grace. I ask you to give strength to those who do not have these freedoms and protect them as they seek to serve you. Increase my faith so that if the time and circumstance ever comes that I face this opposition, I will be faithful to you. Use me to help others in their service. Forgive me when I fail to be what you want me to be. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus my Savior and my Lord.
