Daily Devotional: Psalms 107:33-38

Psalms 107:33-38

33 He turned rivers into a desert, flowing springs into thirsty ground, 34 and fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who lived there. 35 He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs; 36 there he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle. 37 They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest; 38 he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish.

There are so many things that the people of this world worry about, fret over and try to change but God is in control. While we are to be good stewards of the earth while we live here, there is nothing we can do to change the universe that does not fit in the will of God. He has set things in motion and as described by the wise man of old, what has been will be and what is now will be again.

What does matter is that we learn to trust him in all things. The God who created the earth and every living creature can change plush forests into dry desert or he can make the barren wasteland a land of plenty with lush green vegetation. He can move the mountains into the valleys or make the island disappear.

What is even more wonderful is that he can change a heart of hatred, bitterness and malice to a heart of love, mercy and forgiveness. He can take the foulest mouth and use it for blessing and spreading his word. He can use the most dishonest person we know to proclaim his infallible truth.

But without all the extremes, he can take my heart and yours and mold us until our hearts become like the heart of Jesus. His Spirit can work in us and fill us with his love until it runs over to all those around us. He can teach us to forgive in a way that we will not even remember the wrong that has been done to us. He can set on fire the desire to know his word and give us the wisdom to grasp what we study and the wisdom to apply it to our lives. But his power is in our power. We must allow God to live in us, Jesus to dwell in our hearts and his Spirit to work in every part of us. He will never force any of the needed changes upon us. We must open the door and invite him in.

O God, I do ask you to come into my heart as you impart your Spirit in me and my life. Give me courage to trust you enough to allow him to change me and work me over completely. Give me will power to get rid of all vestiges of sin and to be flooded with your grace and your divine nature. As I come to know your peace better, help me lead others to you by my example. Never let me take any glory to myself but always remember that all glory belongs to you. Use me to help others live for you and find your salvation. I pray in the name of Jesus.
