Daily Devotional: Psalms 105:28-36
Psalms 105:28-36
28 He sent darkness and made the land dark--for had they not rebelled against his words? 29 He turned their waters into blood, causing their fish to die. 30 Their land teemed with frogs, which went up into the bedrooms of their rulers. 31 He spoke, and there came swarms of flies, and gnats throughout their country. 32 He turned their rain into hail, with lightning throughout their land; 33 he struck down their vines and fig trees and shattered the trees of their country. 34 He spoke, and the locusts came, grasshoppers without number; 35 they ate up every green thing in their land, ate up the produce of their soil. 36 Then he struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of all their manhood.
It is so easy to read the story of the plagues God brought on Egypt and think that they sure were a nuisance to the people they came on. While frogs, gnats and flies were that, most of these brought real destruction on various parts of the economy and the nation in general. When all the water turned to blood, that meant there was no water to drink or anything else water would have been used for. But when the plague came on the livestock, all the cattle were killed along with donkeys, camels, sheep and goats. When the locusts invaded the land, every green plant was eaten. This meant all of their crops were destroyed.
In the end, God destroyed their army too. This meant that he had destroyed and plundered the entire nation, one step at a time. The results were worse than if an invading army had come in and wiped them out. Their economy was destroyed, their government left in disarray after the many deaths of family leaders and their military wiped out. Israel, Moses nor God had raised an army or lifted a weapon against them and yet they were completely defeated.
While each of these events might be explained as a “natural” happening, we know that God did each of them to show his power and to demonstrate he is sovereign. He told Pharaoh to let his people go but he did not listen.
God is still sovereign so we better listen to his word. He still has power to control what we might call “natural” and to destroy what he chooses to bring down.
Mighty God, ruler of all the universe, I thank you for considering me. I am only a small speck in the sphere of time and space but you know me by name and know everything I do, what I think and why, my strengths and my weaknesses along with my every need. You then show your love, your mercy, compassion and grace by providing my needs and protecting me every day. You have blessed me far beyond anything I deserve and I praise you and thank you. Use me to do your will and to help others in their struggles. I pray in the name of Jesus.
