Psalms 104:19-26

19 The moon marks off the seasons, and the sun knows when to go down. 20 You bring darkness, it becomes night, and all the beasts of the forest prowl. 21 The lions roar for their prey and seek their food from God. 22 The sun rises, and they steal away; they return and lie down in their dens. 23 Then man goes out to his work, to his labor until evening. 24 How many are your works, O LORD! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 25 There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number--living things both large and small. 26 There the ships go to and fro, and the leviathan, which you formed to frolic there.

How could the Psalmist have known that the moon and heavenly bodies control things here on earth besides just day and night? While he probably did not fully understand what we know today about this, he wrote by inspiration and stated the facts correctly. The Bible is not supposed to be a book of science but in all the years it has existed, there has never been one single thing that it says that true science has proven to be false. There have been lots of ideas and theories over the years that don’t agree with the Bible (from the many theories of evolution on down) but never a single proven scientific fact.

The same is true with history and archeology; the Bible deals with these but was not written primarily to cover these subjects. Over the years many of the stories, people and places have been doubted. Their non-existence in history has been used to “prove” the Bible to be false but over and over again the archeologists have unearthed finds that show it is history that is flawed but never the Bible. It has been verified with hundreds of finds over hundreds of years. There have even been archeologist whose goal was to disprove the Bible but after years of digging have been converted to Christ because of the compelling evidence they found.

God’s word is inspired and is the revelation of truth. It has been given to us to show us why we need Christ and how we can come to him. It has been given to lead us, guide us and direct our steps while at the same time it issues warnings and corrects us. It provides all we need for life and godliness.

Lord God and heavenly Father, I thank you for revealing yourself to us in the person of Jesus your Son and then recording it for us in your word. Thank you for providing your will for us and your many warnings and blessings to guide us. Give me wisdom to understand your word and to apply it in my life. Help me as a teacher to always know the truth and to speak it in love and in a way that will build others up and not detract them from living for you. I ask a special blessing for those who are grieving today. I pray in Jesus name.
