Daily Devotional: Psalms 104:1-9

Psalms 104:1-9

1 Praise the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty. 2 He wraps himself in light as with a garment; he stretches out the heavens like a tent 3 and lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds his chariot and rides on the wings of the wind. 4 He makes winds his messengers, flames of fire his servants. 5 He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved. 6 You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. 7 But at your rebuke the waters fled, at the sound of your thunder they took to flight; 8 they flowed over the mountains, they went down into the valleys, to the place you assigned for them. 9 You set a boundary they cannot cross; never again will they cover the earth.

Someone has said that to the atheist the universe is the greatest marvel ever created by nobody. Scientists have spent centuries trying to figure out the movements of the heavenly bodies. Whether the fields of botany, human anatomy, or any other, the universe with all its diversity, food chains, inter-dependence and yet consistent order demands an intelligent being; at least to any intelligent being it should. There is nothing that demands more blind faith than the theory of evolution as taught in our world today.

But not only does creation demand an intelligence far beyond anything or anyone human, it requires that one have the power to do the creating. It also requires wisdom to do it right. What we know from his word is that God planned it all in his mind and then spoke it all into existence. When it was done, he saw that it all was good. There were not flaws and there were no mistakes.

What we also learn from his word is that God has an enemy named Satan who has been trying to destroy the plan of God from before the beginning of time. If Satan could get the people God created to turn against him then he knew God would have to punish them with death. But God knew his plan and made provisions for the time when sin would be introduced into the world. This plan is embodied in Jesus who died for our sin and rose for our justification. Praise God!

Heavenly Father, your heavens declare your glory and every part of this earth shouts your mighty power. The more I actually know about science, the more I see your wisdom and your power demonstrated. The more I know your word, the more I see your unrelenting need for justice and punishment for sin but at the same time I see your boundless love overflowing in your grace. I thank you for giving your Son to die for my sin so I might live with you in eternity. Forgive me when I fail you and use me in your will daily. I pray in the name of Jesus.
