Daily Devotional: Psalm 90:13-17

Psalm 90:13-17

13 Relent, O LORD! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants. 14 Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. 15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble. 16 May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children. 17 May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us--yes, establish the work of our hands.

“Be with me Lord, I cannot live without thee. I dare not try to take one step alone. I cannot bear the loads of life unaided, I need thy strength to lean myself upon. Be with me Lord! No other gift or blessing thou couldst bestow could with this one compare – A constant sense of thy abiding presence, where-e’er I am, to feel that thou art near.” (Hymn by L. O. Sanderson)

I was talking one day at my job to a lady who was going through some difficult times in her life due to having lost someone who was dear to her. After a short conversation, she asked; “How do people make it through times like this who do not believe in God and have his strength?” The only answer I could give was that I don’t know. We lean on the everlasting arms of Jesus and take one day at a time as we accept his strength and feel his presence.

Paul tells us to be anxious for nothing but in everything with supplication and prayer submit our request to God. It is in this context that he says that the Lord is near. It is almost as though Paul were saying to us to just reach out and hold the hand of our Lord as we go down this rocky path or through this dark place in our lives. So in the words of another hymn we sing that we need him every hour and we cannot live without him. No tender voice like his can peace afford.

We all will face our trials. We all will have difficult days. We can determine to put our trust in God and never let it waver. No matter how little we understand why things are as they are or how difficult they are, we can know that he is with us and will never leave our side. He will forever hold our hands until we cross over to the other side to be with him in eternity.

O Lord God, I thank you for giving your Son to not only die for my sin but also for allowing him to live here and face the things I face. It is such a comfort to know that he is watching over me and to know that he understands my trials, my sorrows, and my heartaches. I am thankful that he now serves as my High Priest and is ever before you to intercede for me. Help me live each day with the realization that you are always near and will never leave me. Use me in your service to do your will. I pray in the name of Jesus.
