Daily Devotional: Psalms 29:7-11

Ps 29:7-11

The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth and strips the forests bare, and in his temple all cry, “Glory!” The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever. May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!

Matt 17:3-6

And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.

When God speaks, the whole earth listens! God spoke to the people who were building the Tower of Babal, and their languages became confused. This changed the way people lived forever. God spoke to Noah and the great flood came and the results were catastrophic. He spoke when Jesus was baptized and let the world know that this was his Son. He spoke to Saul, the ringleader of the persecution against The Way and the entire world heard the gospel.

God may not speak to us in an audible voice that shakes the earth as he did to his people at Mt. Sinai, but his creation screams of his existence all around us. When we see the destruction of a tornado or the hurricane, we see the mighty power of God and it speaks from heaven, declaring his majesty! When we see the flowers bloom, hear the birds sing, or watch the stars at night, we hear him singing sweet peace to our souls. His beautiful creation declares his goodness and his love.

But the people did not listen to Jesus when he was among us. O, to be sure, many of them followed him and were amazed at his miracles, hung onto his words because he spoke with authority, but they soon cried out for him to be crucified. Hear the voice of God and follow Jesus because he is the source of eternal life.

O Lord God, open my ears and my eyes to hear your voice in nature all around me every day as it declares your glory, your power, and your majesty. Open my heart to hear your word that has been revealed by your inspired messengers and to live it in my daily life. As I study more about you and all you have done, I stand in awe of you. Keep me from ever trying to remake you in my likeness but help me be molded into your image. Forgive me when I fail to live up to your glory. I ask you to be with those who are hurting and struggling. I pray in Jesus’ name.
