Daily Devotional: Psalms 51:7-12

Ps 51:7-12

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

Titus 3:4-7

But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

Nothing is so sweet as knowing that we have been forgiven. This is true both with family and friends. It is even true if we have done someone wrong that we barely know and then ask them to forgive us. How much more is this true when we know that the God of heaven has forgiven our sin! A clear conscience is priceless.

This is true because we know that sin breaks our relationship with the one against whom we have sinned. Sin brings death and that is true both physically and spiritually. When we sin against God, be it a “big” sin or something we consider insignificant, it hurts him for us to sin and it hurts him even more because it breaks our fellowship with him. The reason this hurts God so badly is because he made us to be in fellowship with him and to live with him in eternity.

In order to buy us back from sin, to redeem us, he devised a plan for one to live a perfect life and then offer that life for our sin – your sin and mine. The hard part of this plan, even hard for God, was that the only person who could do this was his special and unique Son. So, for this reason, Jesus had to be made like us in all things and then he had to suffer and die in our place. This is the only way that we can have salvation and eternal life. This is love. This is compassion. This is grace.

O Lord, my Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth. Your glory is above all things and your majesty is beyond description. Your wisdom is infinite. How can I even fathom your great love and your wonderful grace? Give me a pure heart, a heart of devotion to you. Make me aware of my actions when I sin against you and then a willingness to admit my sin and turn from it. Thank you for your grace and your cleansing from sin so I can live with a clear conscience and go to bed at night without feeling guilt. Give healing to those who are sick if it is your will. Be with those who are taking treatments. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
