Daily Devotional: Psalms 2:7-12

Ps 2:7-12

I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. You will rule them with an iron scepter; you will dash them to pieces like pottery." Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Heb 1:3-5

The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father"? Or again, "I will be his Father, and he will be my Son"?

This Psalm clearly has a dual meaning. It was written to apply to David, the King of Kings in his day and the ruler of the earth. In the mind of the Jewish people in the time of Jesus, there was never a greater king than was David. They looked for the Messiah, the one who would reign like David. He would rule with a rod of iron and would conquer the earth. He would free them from the Romans.

While the original meaning was applied to David, the greater fulfillment of it is found in Jesus, the real King of Kings, and Lord of Lords. He is over all the nations, and he has been given all authority, both in heaven and on earth. The sad thing is that most of the world refuses to recognize him as King because his kingdom is not of this world but is spiritual in nature. His citizens are his brothers and sisters, and they transcend physical and national borders, boundaries, and landmarks.

Just like almost every nation that has ever existed, it came into being because people sacrificed themselves and people died to make it possible. His kingdom cost him his life, as he was hung on a cross by the Jews and the Romans. He died so we can live forever with him. He lives so we can die to sin and live eternally.

Heavenly Father, it is with joy and praise that I come to you today, realizing my insignificance but at the same time, knowing that I do matter to you. Since you gave your Son to free me from sin, I know that you are willing to do all things to help me become what you want me to be, when I put my trust in you. Thank you for allowing me to know that my sins are forgiven and that I have a home in heaven. Give your healing to those who are sick and getting over surgeries. Be with those who are hurting and struggling. I pray in the name of Jesus.
