Daily Devotional: Psalms 50:1-6

Ps 50:1-6

1 The Mighty one, God, the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to the place where it sets. 2 From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth. 3 Our God comes and will not be silent; a fire devours before him, and around him a tempest rages. 4 He summons the heavens above, and the earth, that he may judge his people: 5 "Gather to me my consecrated ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice." 6 And the heavens proclaim his righteousness, for God himself is judge. 1 Peter 1:17-21

17 Since you call on a Father who judges each man's work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

Aside from the creation itself, the greatest work God has done is in sending his Son to the earth as a substitute sacrifice for our sin. It is in the perfect sacrifice of Jesus on the cross that the wrath of God toward sin can be satisfied. His justice demands that sin be punished with death and without Jesus, none of us could ever have our sins forgiven. It is because of his tender mercy and his great love that he extended his marvelous grace on our behalf. Our God is a great God!

For centuries and for generations the mystery of God was hidden from all of mankind. Even the prophets that spoke of the coming Messiah did not know of whom God was speaking or how it could be that a king could reign forever. The angels in heaven knew that God had a plan but did not understand how it could be what is required. Satan thought he had defeated God with the death of Jesus but even he did not fathom the wisdom of God in the plan of redemption. In the resurrection of Jesus the plan of God was fulfilled so that all mankind can be free from sin and have a hope of eternal life with God, promised to them by faith.

Heavenly Father I am so glad for your wisdom along with your might so that with you all things are possible. Even when it seemed that we are all doomed to hell, you found a way for us to live forever with you. Thank you for loving me, the unlovable and by your grace helping me in my helplessness. Fill me with your Spirit so I will love you with all my heart and love others as you love me. Help me always show your grace in my life as I live for you. I pray in Jesus name.
