Daily Devotional: Psalms 4:1-8

Ps 4:1-8

1 Answer me when I call to you, O my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; be merciful to me and hear my prayer. 2 How long, O men, will you turn my glory into shame? How long will you love delusions and seek false gods? Selah 3 Know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD will hear when I call to him. 4 In your anger do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent. Selah 5 Offer right sacrifices and trust in the LORD. 6 Many are asking, "Who can show us any good?" Let the light of your face shine upon us, O LORD. 7 You have filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and new wine abound. 8 I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

John 14:27

27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

We live in a world filled with turmoil. We have been conditioned by the media to live in fear. Whether a conspiracy or out of true conviction for our safety, the powers that be have removed the peace from our lives and have instilled a fear in many that has taken away any semblance of peace. In addition to this, we have seen an escalation of social and civil unrest unlike anything this country has ever known. It is a far cry from the “Mayberry RFD” lifestyle of a few years ago.

One thing for sure is that the devil is the instigator of fear in our lives. He is the one who seeks to take away our peace. He is the Father of lies and can make almost anything sound logical so we will follow his ways instead of putting our trust in God and finding the peace that Jesus offers. He took away the peace from the Garden and has been doing this in every generation since that time.

Jesus came to give us peace and to take away our fear. God is love and as we learn to trust him and love as he loves, we find that perfected love drives out fear from our hearts. We do not fear judgment because we are his and our sins are all forgiven. We do not fear mankind because they cannot match what the God of peace can do for us. We do not fear disease because Jesus is the great Physician.

O Lord God give me greater faith to take my eyes off of this world and the storms that rage all about me so I will focus on you and on the things above. Remind me that this world is not my home but I am just passing through as I am being made ready for that eternal home where all is peace and joy. Help me always make your will my own so I will be in complete harmony with you in all I do and say. Give me the peace that surpasses understanding as I put my trust in you.  Thank you for loving me and forgiving my sin. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
