Daily Devotional: Psalms 136:10-22

Ps 136:1-3, 10-22

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever.  2 Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever.  3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords: His love endures forever… 10 to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt; His love endures forever.  11 and brought Israel out from among them; His love endures forever.  12 with a mighty hand and outstretched arm; His love endures forever. 13 to him who divided the Red Sea asunder; His love endures forever.  14 and brought Israel through the midst of it, His love endures forever.  15 but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea; His love endures forever.

16 to him who led his people through the desert, His love endures forever.  17 who struck down great kings, His love endures forever.  18 and killed mighty kings--His love endures forever. 19 Sihon king of the Amorites, His love endures forever.  20 and Og king of Bashan--His love endures forever.  21 and gave their land as an inheritance, His love endures forever.  22 an inheritance to his servant Israel; His love endures forever.

1 Thess 5:23-24

23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.

At just the right time, God showed his great power and infinite mercy to the children of Israel and delivered them from Egyptian bondage. It was not because any of them were doing any great deeds to please God. In fact, many of them were worshipping the idols of their masters, the gods of Egypt. As a group, they did not deserve to be delivered but out of compassion, God made a way.

At just the right time, God sent his Son to come to earth and be our sacrifice and to deliver us from the bondage of sin. He does not offer salvation to anyone because they deserve to be saved. We all have sinned and we all at one time were slaves of sin but because of his great mercy he saves by his grace. We are raised from the grave of baptism to be alive in Christ, to live for him. By faith, we have the victory in Jesus Christ over sin and death. His love endures forever.

Heavenly Father I am so thankful for your great love, your mercy and your grace shown to me in Jesus Christ. Help me always remember that I am what I am by your grace and not by my own doing. Give me a pure heart and a genuine heart of commitment to you as I seek to live for you each day. Thank you for the material things you have given me and fill me with compassion so I will use it all to your glory. Thank you for your forgiveness in Jesus and fill me with grace so I will be forgiving to others, even when they do not deserve it. In Jesus name.
