Daily Devotional: Psalms 135:8-14

Ps 135:8-14

8 He struck down the firstborn of Egypt, the firstborn of men and animals. 9 He sent his signs and wonders into your midst, O Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants. 10 He struck down many nations and killed mighty kings--11 Sihon king of the Amorites, Og king of Bashan and all the kings of Canaan--12 and he gave their land as an inheritance, an inheritance to his people Israel. 13 Your name, O LORD, endures forever, your renown, O LORD, through all generations. 14 For the LORD will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants.

Rom 13:1-2

1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

At the time Paul wrote his letter to the church in Rome, the ruler of the Empire was a wicked man who promoted every kind of immorality. Not only was the land filled with idols, worship included all kinds of prostitution, homosexuality was an accepted lifestyle, pedophilia was commonly practiced as was abortion and divorce for any reason. This is what happens when God is left out.

When we study and learn from history, this should frighten us terribly. Our nation is being led down this same path by those who reject God and his word. In their arrogance, too many of our leaders think they control the government and even the world. Any hint of our faith in Jesus is put down and is considered by many in the media to be offensive while their idolatry is extolled as a virtue. Hedonism and humanism are forms of idol worship. Christians must stand up for Jesus!

But what can we do? We must study God’s word and then apply it in our lives as we imitate God, beginning in our thoughts. This means we do not bash those with whom we disagree, even in politics. We show respect to our leaders because God told us to do so. When we have the opportunity to vote, it should be based only on our Christian values. And our most powerful weapon is prayer for our nation and our leaders that we can live quiet and peaceful lives in godliness and holiness.

Heavenly Father I come to you today confessing that many in our nation have become very ungodly and immoral. Even many of our leaders have removed you from their minds and made laws that promote immorality. Please be merciful to our country and send a spiritual awakening. Give me strength to stand for the truth as you have revealed it. Bless your people that we may exert our influence on the world around us and will lead others to you. In Jesus name.
