Daily Devotional: Psalms 2:7-12

Ps 2:7-12

7 I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You will rule them with an iron scepter; you will dash them to pieces like pottery." 10 Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Heb 1:2-5

3 The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. 5 For to which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father"? Or again, "I will be his Father, and he will be my Son"?

This Psalm was written concerning David and his earthly kingdom. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews applies it to Jesus, the Messiah, who is king over God’s spiritual kingdom today. Not only is Jesus over all of mankind, he is higher than the angels. He is the Son of God and sits at the Fathers right hand today.

Since God made David the king, all people were to respect him and serve him in complete obedience. They were to bow down to him and kiss him. In doing this their lives would be better because he would rule with an iron scepter but in the justice and fairness of the Lord. As long as he followed the Law of God and kept his heart wholly devoted to him, his kingdom would be blessed.

God has promised us today that as long as we serve Jesus by obeying his word and keeping our hearts devoted to him, he will bless us also. He has promised to provide our physical needs and will watch over us to protect us. He will not allow us to be tempted beyond our ability to bear but will provide a way to overcome.

O Lord God, my heavenly Father, thank you for all of the blessing provided to me in Jesus Christ. Help me keep a pure heart and to seek first your kingdom and your righteousness. Increase my faith so I will walk in your light and the blood of Jesus will continue to cleanse me. Convict me when I do wrong and give me a willingness to humble myself in repentance. Use me to teach your gospel and to show Jesus to those around me. Heal the broken hearted and give them your peace. Use me to encourage others. I pray in the name of Jesus.
