Daily Devotional: Psalms 141:5b-10

Ps 141:5b-10

Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers; 6 their rulers will be thrown down from the cliffs, and the wicked will learn that my words were well spoken. 7 They will say, "As one plows and breaks up the earth, so our bones have been scattered at the mouth of the grave." 8 But my eyes are fixed on you, O Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge--do not give me over to death. 9 Keep me from the snares they have laid for me, from the traps set by evildoers. 10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I pass by in safety.

2 Tim 2:24-26

24 And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25 Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

As the king over Israel it was the God given responsibility of David to destroy the enemies of the nation of God’s people. So, anyone who opposed him, opposed God and his zeal to destroy was based on his desire to honor God. Their enemies were from Satan and were evil wicked people.

The enemies of God and his kingdom today are our enemies. Anyone who would bring reproach on God needs to be stopped. Just as David was ordered to destroy and was empowered to do so by God so are we today. But our battle is not a physical battle but is spiritual and waged with truth and the word of God.

We tear down strongholds and destroy enemies by teaching them the gospel of Jesus Christ. We bring them Christ and make them servants of righteousness by showing them the love of Jesus in our lives and our speech. As they learn of Jesus and his love for them, they are given an opportunity to have forgiveness and be made right with God – something everyone is looking for in life, inner peace, joy that cannot be taken away and hope for the future, even after this life is over. It is only found in Jesus and as his army we have the mission of making it known to all.

Heavenly Father help me carry out the mission you have given me. Fill me with your love so I will love those who hate me and those who want to harm me. Give me grace to speak only things that will honor you and lead others to Jesus. Help me have the wisdom to know how to disagree with others without losing or weakening my conviction, but at the same time to be considerate, loving and kind in everything I say and do toward them. Empower me to trust you enough to carry out this mission and not pass my own judgment on others. Forgive me when I fail. Bless those who are hurting. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
