Daily Devotional: Psalms 107:17-22

Ps 107:17-22

17 Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities. 18 They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death. 19 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. 20 He sent forth his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. 21 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men. 22 Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy.

Phil 3:20-21

20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

There is nothing that can cause as much trouble in our lives as sin. We forget God and all he has done for us and go our own stubborn way. Its not that we mean to do this or that we even want to do it. We just get busy making a living, raising the children and all the other necessary things of life and allow God to be crowded out because of our time constraints. We plan to do better next week but that day just never arrives. And when it seems that all is going well, things begin to fall apart, not a major crisis but just out of control. Before we know it, we have grown so far away from God that we seldom ever pray and never read his word.

In spite of our stubborn heart, God still loves us and like the father in the parable of the prodigal son, He is still waiting for us to come home. We are never in too deep that his love cannot rescue us. The remedy is taking our eyes off of this world and looking to Jesus, where he is seated at the right hand of our Father. As we renew our trust in him as our Lord and begin to read his word again and spend time with him in prayer, our hearts are filled with peace and our lives have a real joy that the world cannot know. Only he can put our lives together again.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow! Jesus is our fountain of living water. He sends bread from heaven to feed our souls as we eagerly await our eternal home.

Heavenly Father forgive me when I fail you. Give me strength to refuse to allow this world with all of its passing pleasures and cares to take me away from serving you. Help me keep my eyes focused on Jesus and on the things above. I do thank you for all the material things in my life and all of the pleasures you give but help me use them to your glory and not to my hurt. I pray for your church, for your people wherever they are. Help each one of us show the world your love, your peace and the joy in living for you. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
