Daily Devotional: Psalms 80:14-19

Ps 80:14-19

14 Return to us, O God Almighty! Look down from heaven and see! Watch over this vine, 15 the root your right hand has planted, the son you have raised up for yourself. 16 Your vine is cut down, it is burned with fire; at your rebuke your people perish. 17 Let your hand rest on the man at your right hand, the son of man you have raised up for yourself. 18 Then we will not turn away from you; revive us, and we will call on your name. 19 Restore us, O LORD God Almighty; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.

Rom 6:8-12

8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.

We are saved by faith. This is plainly taught throughout the Bible. But what kind of faith will save us? First of all, our faith must be in God; not in some person, not in some church or religion, school or religious paper. Next, our faith must be an active faith that is willing to obey God at all cost. Jesus showed this when he prayed in the garden that the Father’s will be done and not his own. The religious leaders in the days of Jesus were very religious but it was for their own purposes and in their own way. He rebuked them as hypocrites and said that our righteousness must exceed theirs if we want to be saved. The prophets often rebuked the priests (in the O.T.) because they were not following the law.

Israel often strayed from God and refused to obey the law. Many times when this happened, they were rebuked by God because of a lack of faith. Just in the trip from Egypt to the Promised Land it happened several times. Moses did not give God the glory when he brought water from the rock and because of this he was not permitted to enter the land of milk and honey. Obedience shows faith.

Lord God give me a heart that is willing to trust and obey your will for me. Give me a greater desire to know your word by continued study. Give me wisdom to understand it and apply it to my live. Increase my faith so I don’t try to do things my own way or rationalize why you don’t mean what you say in the Bible. Help me turn my life over to you more and more every day as I seek to put off the things of the flesh and allow your Spirit to work in me and mold me into your image. I want to be diligent to be a partaker of your divine nature and never forget your gracious forgiveness of my sin. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
