Daily Devotional: Psalms 78:25-31

Ps 78:25-31

25 Men ate the bread of angels; he sent them all the food they could eat. 26 He let loose the east wind from the heavens and led forth the south wind by his power. 27 He rained meat down on them like dust, flying birds like sand on the seashore. 28 He made them come down inside their camp, all around their tents. 29 They ate till they had more than enough, for he had given them what they craved. 30 But before they turned from the food they craved, even while it was still in their mouths, 31 God's anger rose against them; he put to death the sturdiest among them, cutting down the young men of Israel.

1 Cor 10:11-13

11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! 13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

We should never make the mistake of studying the Old Testament stories of God’s people and thinking that somehow, we are so much better than those who lived and sinned against God. It is easy for us to think that if we had been there and we had seen his miracles, we would have been really faithful and would not have rebelled against God or doubted his ability to take care of us.

The truth is, we have all of these miracles recorded for us (plus a whole lot more) and we know what God has done and is still able to do, but we fail to trust him with even the small things in our daily lives. Do we cast all of our cares on him and trust him to carry all our burdens, or do we try to do it all by ourselves? When we worry and we fret, we are showing our lack of faith.

Whatever you and I face in life, God is able to provide a way of escape. It may be that he will just give us greater grace, or it may be more strength to endure, or he may take it out of our lives. But in it all, he will give us all we need to be faithful to him and to trust him to take care of all our needs. He is a God of love and peace.

Heavenly Father, God of all comfort, help me use all the peace and comfort you have given me over the years, to comfort those who are suffering today. There is so much turmoil and so much hatred in our world, so I ask you to help me trust you and not get overly concerned about it all. Guide our nation, give wisdom to our leaders and help them to do what is right. Help me always show respect for those in authority, even when I don’t agree with them. Be with your church so each of us as your children will love each other. I pray in Jesus name.
