Daily Devotional: Psalms 75:6-10

Ps 75:6-10

6 No one from the east or the west or from the desert can exalt a man. 7 But it is God who judges: He brings one down, he exalts another. 8 In the hand of the LORD is a cup full of foaming wine mixed with spices; he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth drink it down to its very dregs. 9 As for me, I will declare this forever; I will sing praise to the God of Jacob. 10 I will cut off the horns of all the wicked, but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.

James 4:10-12

10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. 11 Brothers do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. 12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you-who are you to judge your neighbor?

Who am I to condemn another? God sets the standard. God makes the rules and determines what is right and wrong. But it is also the same God who extends his grace because of his great love to those who would come to him in faith. If he chooses to forgive, how can we not also forgive. After all, we are right with God only because he has forgiven us as well. Jesus said that when we have done all we are told to do, we are still just unprofitable servants. No room for boasting.

Most of us, most of the time, would do well to spend a lot more time examining ourselves, our lives and our attitudes a whole lot more while spending less time looking at the lives of others. It is so easy for us to see the lesser faults of those around us while ignoring the greater wrongs in our own lives.

When we study God’s word or listen to a lesson presented from it, do we think how this fits us and what we need to change or improve or are we thinking how it fits someone else and what they need to do? There is a temptation for preachers and teachers as we study to find lessons and sermons for others while not making application to our own lives. We (all of us) need to heed the warning of James as we look into the perfect law of liberty as a mirror, we see ourselves as we are and make changes as needed. God’s word and his will is for me and my life!

Heavenly Father help me always make application of your word to my own life first and foremost. At the same time, use me to reach out to the lost and show them your word and how it applies to them also. Use me to restore the brother or sister who is overtaken in sin, but to do so with meekness and love. Instill in me a heart of love, just as you love me, so I will have compassion for others. As I rejoice in your forgiveness for my sin, help me forgive all who have done me wrong. I ask your care and blessings on all who read this. I pray in the name of Jesus.
