Daily Devotional: Psalms 19:1-6

Ps 19:1-6

1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. 3 There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. 4 Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun, 5 which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. 6 It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is hidden from its heat.

Col 1:15-18

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

When we try to understand our God, we are at a total loss. He has revealed so much about himself and has told us of his work. But how can one God be three? How can any being have so much power that they can just speak into existence the entire universe with the order and design it shows forth?

What may be even harder to comprehend is how this all powerful, all wise and majestic God even knows who we are, knows each of our names and cares about us. In fact, he cares so much for us that his very nature is described as love. This love is so great that he was willing to allow his Son to suffer and die so we can be with him in eternity. Jesus was willing to give up the glories of heaven and his place there to live on earth as one of us, and in so doing to make the way for us to be saved from our sin. This great God is our God whom we serve with joy.

Paul says that the evidence shown in creation leaves everyone without excuse when it comes to serving God. The psalmist says there is no place on earth that the people living there cannot see the evidence of the glory of God. This is why he later says that the fool has said in his heart that there is no God.

My Father and my God, I come to you in humility with thanksgiving for your great love for me. Create in me a pure heart and a commitment to do your will every day as long as I live. Forgive me when I fail. Keep me from being selfish so I will use what you have given me to help others in whatever way I can. Open my eyes to the opportunities you make available and give me wisdom to use each one. I am so thankful for all of the spiritual blessings I have in Jesus Christ. Help me never take them for granted. So many are suffering in so many ways and I ask your care, your healing and your peace for them. I pray in the name of Jesus.
