Daily Devotional: Psalms 148:7-14

Ps 148:7-14

7 Praise the LORD from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths, 8 lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding, 9 you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars, 10 wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds, 11 kings of the earth and all nations, you princes and all rulers on earth, 12 young men and maidens, old men and children. 13 Let them praise the name of the LORD, for his name alone is exalted; his splendor is above the earth and the heavens. 14 He has raised up for his people a horn, the praise of all his saints, of Israel, the people close to his heart. Praise the LORD.

The apostle Paul said to the Corinthians that the wisdom of man is foolishness to God. It is easy to imagine how God must have been laughing at the scientist of the age when I was a teenager and they were so worried about the earth freezing. It seemed everything was getting colder and this world as we know it was coming to an end because it would all freeze. Today these great intellectuals are worried that it is all melting and getting too warm. Calamity is coming!

While we must be good stewards of God’s earth, he made it and we are told the power of his Son sustains all creation. The same power that created the earth can keep it going and determine the cycles through which it goes. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead to never die again can keep life on this globe as long as it is his will. It is all under his control. Calamity is coming but it will be the coming of Jesus and the final judgment of those who deny him as Lord!

Long ago all the people of the earth spoke the same language. They decided to make a great tower to reach to heaven. (Heaven may mean the sky or maybe they actually were trying to reach “heaven” where God resides. As a child, my friends and I once tried to dig a hole from Alabama to China!) God looked down on these people and was displeased because of their disregard for him and their egos that elevated them to gods. He stopped the efforts of their global world by confusing their languages. This cause them to scatter over the earth.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your wonderful love and your matchless grace shown to me every day. Thank you for this earth and all of your creation; for the life I am allowed to live and enjoy so much. Thank you for the scientist who can discover your works to use your provisions to make our lives easier. More than all of this, thank you for sending your Son to die for my sin. Thank you for revealing your will to me in written form and allowing me to understand how to live for you. Give me a heart of love, a spirit of compassion and a will to serve you by serving others. Increase my faith daily. I pray in the name of Jesus.
