Daily Devotional: Psalms 20:6-9 (2)

Ps 20:6-9

Now I know that the Lord saves his anointed; he will answer him from his holy heaven with the saving might of his right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright. O Lord, save the king! May he answer us when we call.

Rom 8:6-9

For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

We have a choice in life. We may choose to live for the flesh, that is, we live to satisfy ourselves, without regard for eternity. Life is now so we live it with all the gusto we can muster, live for the moment! This is indeed the philosophy of many, and it is propagated in commercials, in movies and on the big screen. But this leads to spiritual death, a destiny without God, eternal darkness.

The Lord saves his anointed, those who are his in Jesus Christ. Jesus said that he is the good shepherd, and a shepherd knows his sheep. Paul said that the Lord knows those who are his. In this context “to know” means more than just know who we are. It means that he intimately knows us, our needs, our desires, and who we really are when no one else is around. It also implies that he will take care of us when danger threatens, supplying our needs as they arise.

During the wilderness wanderings, Israel was supplied daily with food to eat in the form of manna. They got just enough food for that day, except on Friday, they got enough to last through the Sabbath (Saturday). Jesus taught us to pray for our daily food. When talking about not worrying, he said that we are to not worry about tomorrow, because each day has enough trouble of its own. Trust God today! The obvious truth is that the only day that we ever live is today!

O God, majestic and supreme, I come to you asking you to take away my anxieties as I trust you today in all things. You are so good to me, even when I get distracted and forget that you are watching over me. It is such a wonderful thing to know that whatever I face today, you already know about it, and you have already supplied what I need to get through it. Increase my faith! Forgive me when I fail to be all you want me to be. Give your peace to your people, no matter where they are in this world or what they face. I pray in Jesus’ name.
