Daily Devotional: Proverbs 31:10-15
Prov 31:10-15
10 An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. 11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. 12 She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. 13 She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. 14 She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. 15 She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens.
Heb 11:31
By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.
It is interesting to me that God uses some of the most unlikely people to carry out his will on earth. Here was this Gentile woman, who is known as “the prostitute” but who is commended for her faith. In Matthew chapter one, she is listed in the lineage of Jesus. Then soon after her name is another woman named Ruth, who was from the heathen country of Moab. But God uses good women in all ages.
One of the things that sets the Bible apart from other historical religious books is that many women are mentioned by name. Women are honored for their roles in the family, as well as in the nation of God’s people. In his letters to the early churches, Paul (who is sometimes accused of not liking women) often names women and commends them for their good works and dedication to God. Luke tells about a woman named Dorcas who was full of good deeds.
Timothy is said to be who he was because of his mother and grandmother. There is no part of a family that is more important than the woman of the house. Even in the days when most women stayed home and worked hard all day, they were the ones who held it all together in most families.
I am reminded of a small part in the drivetrain of rear drive cars call a universal joint. It can be held in the palm of your hand but without it, the car will not go anywhere. It is found under the car, holding the drive shaft together. It is small and inconspicuous but when it failed, the car stopped. Many good women may be “out of sight” but are vital to the proper functioning of the family and of society.
O Lord God, thank you for all the good women, many of whom go without any recognition from others. Thank you for the many godly mothers, God-fearing wives, and loving sisters. Thank you for the many good women you have put in my family. I ask you to help all of these ladies see their importance in your plans, no matter what their role is in life. Give me your strength to accomplish what you want me to do, and to do it in a way that you receive the honor. Forgive me when I fail to live up to your glory. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus, my Lord.
