Daily Devotional: Psalms 62:1-6

Ps 62:1-6

My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress; I will never be shaken. How long will you assault a man? Would all of you throw him down--this leaning wall, this tottering fence? They fully intend to topple him from his lofty place; they take delight in lies. With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse. Selah Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress; I will not be shaken.

Matt 6:31-34

So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

When God is with us, we rest in him. When he is on our side and we are on his, we never have to worry about what anyone will or can do to us. This is not a promise that our life will be a bed of roses. We will face troubles and problems and there will be people who do not like us and may even try to harm us, but in Christ we know that we will have the ultimate victory. In him, we are more than conquerors.

Worry and anxiety is the result of depending on our own strength, or our limited understanding, or our circumstances. Faith is depending on God, his strength, his love, and his concern and compassion. This is often easier to say than it is to let God have our heart and our destiny. There is nothing our God cannot do.

As we get older, we realize our own mortality and that of those we love. Our bodies wear out but the wonderful thing is that our spirits are being renewed day by day. I often remember the excitement of my mother, in her nineties, as she would study her Bible, listen to sermons (at least five to ten every Sunday), or discuss what she had read or heard with me. She was challenged with new ideas and weighed opposing views with her Bible knowledge, always seeking truth.

O Lord God, help me seek first your kingdom and your righteousness in my daily life. Help me know, understand, and practice your truth. Remind me that my knowledge must be filtered through your love as I react with others. Give your healing to those who are sick, strength to those taking treatments, peace to those whose lives are in turmoil. Use me as your instrument to lift up and help others. Thank you for the assurance you give to me in your Word, assurance of your presence now and eternal life in the hereafter. I pray in the name of Jesus.
