Daily Devotional: Psalms 46:1-7

Ps 46:1-7

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Selah There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Rom 13:1-2

Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

We live in a wicked world. It is referred to in scripture as the kingdom of darkness and it is controlled by the prince of darkness, the devil. But this is not new. Most of the world has always been controlled by him and has been wicked. By the time of Noah, everyone was thinking only evil continually. So, our world today is nothing new but is a continuation of the past. The gate that leads to destruction is wide.

While we must accept the fact of sin, it does not mean that we give our approval or that we are comfortable with it. All sin is the violation of the will of God. Evil seems to get worse as it receives the endorsement of society and the laws of the land. While we still have our religious freedoms in this country, it does seem to me that they are being eroded and that many of them are being threatened.

But behind the scenes, God is in control. Let me say that again: God is in control. He may allow evil to exist and he lets wicked people gain power, he has placed his limits on Satan and on all who serve him. The most fierce animal in the world cannot harm us when it is in a cage. The problem for us is when we venture into the cage. As long as we trust God and serve him, we are safe from harm.

O Lord God, it would be wonderful if you would give us leaders who respect you and who trust you. I do ask that you allow us to live peaceful lives in this land. Be with our nation that more and more will turn away from evil and serve you. Use me, and all who believe in you, to share the saving gospel so that the lost can be saved from sin and hell. Increase my faith so that I do not worry about things that I cannot control. Give me strength to change what I can change. Give peace and healing to the sick and those who are hurting. I pray in the name of Jesus.
