Daily Devotional: Psalms 18:30-36

Ps 18:30-36

As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him. For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he enables me to stand on the heights. He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. You give me your shield of victory, and your right hand sustains me; you stoop down to make me great. You broaden the path beneath me, so that my ankles do not turn.

Rom 8:26-28, 31b

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. If God is for us, who can be against us?

David put his trust in God. That one sentence sums up the life of this great king and godly man. From his youth when he went out to fight against the giant, until his dying day, he put his trust in God. He depended on the LORD to protect him when he was a fugitive, to defend him when his enemies attacked him, and to provide for him when he was in need. It was the LORD who won his battles.

But this trust caused him to allow God to direct his steps and dictate his values and to instruct his life. He made his mistakes and he sinned, but his goal in life was to do the will of God and to follow his commandments. When he was made aware of what he had done wrong, he admitted it and turned from it. It was this trust in God that gave him the confidence to keep going when things got tough and there seemed no way out. He knew nothing was too big for God to win.

So, “if God is for us, who can be against us?” This is the God who can do much more than we can ask, think, or even imagine, through the power of his Spirit that lives and works in us. As long as we are walking in his will, there is no power in heaven or earth that can conquer us. The victory is ours in Jesus Christ our Lord!

O LORD, since you have given your only Son to die for my sin and you have given me the way to live in your word, and since you have given your Spirit to live in me, I know that you will do all things for me in this life so I can live forever with you in eternity. What a blessed thought to know that I am safe in your care. I ask you to give me wisdom to know how to live for you more each day. Use me to help those who are hurting and those who are struggling to be faithful and those who are overcome with grief. Give them your peace. I pray in the name of Jesus.
