Daily Devotional: Psalms 107:33-43

Ps 107:33-43

He turned rivers into a desert, flowing springs into thirsty ground, and fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who lived there. He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs; there he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle. They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest; he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish. Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity, and sorrow; he who pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste. But he lifted the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks. The upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths. Whoever is wise, let him heed these things and consider the great love of the LORD.

Matt 5:5

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

While I do not believe in the “feel good” or “get rich” gospel that is often so popular, there is a principal that is set forth in the Bible that says God blesses those who put their trust in him and serve him. This does not mean that there will never be problems or that we have a physical abundance all the time. It does mean that God will take care of his own. He knows just what we need, what we can properly handle and what we will use to his glory.

But the opposite side of this is also true. God does not take care of those who reject him or who put their trust in false gods of this world. In fact, he often will punish and warn those who fail to serve him. It may come in the form of what we call “natural disasters” or it may come as personal tragedies, or any other way he chooses to send them. He is in control and does not explain his actions to us.

What makes this difficult for us to understand is that these things also come upon godly people as well as the wicked. These things can come as the result of our own mistakes and poor decisions. But according to the wise man of old, these also may happen as the result of time and chance, which come upon us all.

Heavenly Father I am so thankful for your love. I know that all the good you do for me in my life and all the blessings you send on me are the result of your love for me. I also know that discipline is the result of love. You show your love when you help me get through the trials of life and when you give me comfort in times of grief or despair. Your love is shown in your mercy and forgiveness. Fill me with your love so I will show Jesus to others as they see my attitudes and hear my words. Help me serve others with your love. I pray in the name of Jesus.
