Daily Devotional: Psalms 102:23-28

Ps 102:23-28

23 In the course of my life he broke my strength; he cut short my days. 24 So I said: "Do not take me away, O my God, in the midst of my days; your years go on through all generations. 25 In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 26 They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them and they will be discarded. 27 But you remain the same, and your years will never end. 28 The children of your servants will live in your presence; their descendants will be established before you."

1 John 2:15-17

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For everything in the world-the cravings of the flesh, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does-comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

It is only a fool who does not realize that life is short and that our time on earth is soon gone. While we are young, we have all these ideas of what we plan to do and how we will change the world. We have a lifetime ahead of us. As we age and we see many of these lose their significance and others never get done, we may look back and think that life is being wasted or that we have failed.

In comparison to eternity, this world is here for a short time and each person has a very limited life span while here. All the things on earth will soon perish and all of the changes we made or might have made will mean nothing. That is, unless we have made a change in our life to serve the Lord, or we have led someone else to live for him. Unless we know the true purpose of life, it is wasted effort, like chasing after the wind. Day follows night and years come and go.

But when all has been heard, when all has been tried, and when considered, the purpose of life is to respect God as God, trust him, and obey his word. Jesus is to be the reason for our lives. Many things and desires on earth are necessary for us but must never take the place of our submission and service to God.

Heavenly Father, you have given me such a good life and such wonderful people to surround me with love. I thank you for this and praise you for your grace. I am also very aware of so many in various parts of the world who do not have these blessings and who are struggling in so many ways; many of whom are persecuted daily because of their faith in Jesus while others are living in war ravaged areas. I do ask you to protect them, increase their faith to trust you and to be faithful to you. Use me to serve you by serving others. I pray in the name of Jesus.
